Michael Slagowski wrapped up his final Idaho state track meet in typical Slagowski fashion -- going all out.
The Penn State-bound distance runner led Rocky Mountain to a 5A state team title on Saturday at Dona Larsen Park. Slagowski swept the 3,200, the 1,600, the 800 and ran on the 4x400 that finished in third place.
Slagowski, who leads the nation in the 800, 1,600 and full mile, set an overall state record in the 800 on Saturday afternoon, clocking 1:49.36.
He ran 4:16.76 in the 1,600 and 9:36.86 in the 3,200.
"I was trying to take it easy in the 2-mile and mile, and just go for the win, just because I wanted to run a fast 800 and I have Pre Classic next weekend, (so) I didn't want to go all out," Slagowski said.
It was a special day for Rocky Mountain as the girls won the team title as well, a first state meet sweep for the program. Rocky was also the first school since 2010 to secure 5A titles for both boys and girls.
"It's awesome for the boys and girls," Slagowski said. "It was really cool, that was definitely the main goal of states."
Other highlights: - The Bishop Kelly boys and girls teams won 4A team titles, a first in program history. Sprinter Khalil Forehand won the 100 (11.02), 200 (22.88) and was part of the winning 4x100.
- Borah senior Sara Christianson, who will run for Oregon State, broke the 5A meet record in the 1,600 meters (4:53.86) and 3,200 (10:36).
- Caldwell sophomore Mark Sullivan won the 4A pole vault clearing 15 feet.
- Luke Leonnig of Eagle won the 5A discus title with a toss of 187 feet.
- Britt Ispen of Captial claimed the 5A high jump crown (6-8).
- Centennial's Tatayana won the 5A long jump, going 18-6. |
